Stone masonry restoration covers the repair, conservation and replacement of the stone elements on a building. That means cutting out and replacing damaged stone blocks, carving new indents to match the original profile, reforming moulded cornices and string courses, and replicating decorative details in natural stone or stucco where the originals have failed beyond repair.
Stonework on older buildings takes constant punishment from rain, frost, pollution and general age. Portland stone softens and spalls. Bath stone erodes. Stucco cracks and lifts away from the wall behind it. Previous repairs done in cement rather than lime make things worse because the cement is harder than the stone around it, which forces the damage into the original material. Restoring this kind of stonework properly means using lime-based mortars, matching the original stone as closely as possible, and working with hand tools where the detail demands it.

Survey & Identification
We work out what’s damaged, what stone it is, and what caused the problem, whether that’s damp, movement, or a bad repair job.
Stone Matching & Sourcing
Sometimes we can repair the stone in place. If it’s too far gone, we cut out the damaged section and fit a new hand-carved indent or cast stucco to match.
Stone Repair or Replacement
Damaged areas may be repaired in situ, or replaced with hand-carved stone indents or cast stucco, depending on the scale and complexity.
Finishing & Blending
We colour-match and weather new stone so it sits with the original, not against it. All repointing is lime mortar, not cement. Old walls need to breathe.
