What is Brick Repointing, Cleaning & Restoration?
Mortar joints do not last forever. After 80 or 100 years of rain, frost and pollution, the pointing on an older building starts to break down. It crumbles, cracks, and eventually falls out altogether. Once the joints are open, water gets into the wall. Bricks that stay wet through winter freeze and blow, losing their faces. What started as tired-looking pointing turns into real damage. Brick repointing is the fix. You rake out the old mortar and pack in new, giving the wall a weathertight joint again.
CBL Stone Renovations carries out brick repointing and brick cleaning across London, Kent, East Sussex and the South East. We have been doing this work for over 30 years, mostly on Georgian and Victorian buildings where the original lime mortar has worn away or, more often, been hacked out and replaced with cement by someone who did not know the difference. We also clean brick facades using DOFF steam cleaning, chemical poultice treatments and controlled mist washing to strip off decades of grime, paint residue and biological growth without damaging the brick underneath. If your brickwork is letting in damp or has been butchered by a previous builder using cement mortar on a lime building, we can sort it out.

How Brick Cleaning, Repointing & Restoration Works
Assessment & Sample Testing
We inspect your brickwork to identify previous cement repairs, types of mortar used, and any surface damage. A small sample test area may be cleaned to determine the most effective method.
Non-Abrasive Brick Cleaning
We use gentle, specialist techniques such as DOFF steam cleaning to remove grime, moss, paint, or carbon staining. These methods are suitable for listed buildings and delicate brickwork, ensuring no damage is caused to the brick face.
Mortar Removal & Joint Preparation
Old or damaged pointing is carefully removed by hand or by machine only where necessary.
Traditional
Repointing
New mortar is matched in colour, texture, and breathability. We use natural lime mortar, which allows the building to “breathe,” prevents trapped moisture, and is ideal for heritage brickwork.
Finishing & Protection
After repointing, we ensure that joints are neatly finished in the appropriate style (flush, recessed, weather-struck), and that any necessary protection (e.g. temporary sheltering or curing) is in place.
