About CBL StoneRenovations
Expert Stone & Building Restoration
Dedicated to the Craft of Building Restoration
CBL Stone Renovations has been repairing and restoring stone, brick and stucco on period buildings for over 30 years. We are stonemasons by trade. That is what we trained in, it is what we have done every working day since, and it is the only thing we do. We work across London, Kent, East Sussex and the South East on Georgian townhouses, Victorian terraces, listed buildings, churches, and commercial heritage properties.
The business started because the people who built it cared about getting old buildings right. Not just making them look tidy from the pavement, but actually fixing them with the correct materials and methods so the work holds up for the next century the way the original did. We use lime mortars, not cement, on pre-1919 buildings. We source natural stone from UK quarries and match it to what is already there. We carve replacement details by hand when that is what the job needs. None of that is unusual for a proper stonemason, but it is surprisingly rare in an industry where a lot of firms will skim over problems with the wrong product to save time.
Our Restoration Approach
We work on listed buildings, unlisted period properties, and commercial heritage buildings. The type of project does not change how we approach it. We survey the building properly, we talk through what needs doing and why, and we get on with the work without dragging it out or leaving you guessing about what is happening.
The team handles stone masonry, stucco repair, brick repointing, rendering and interior plastering. Most of our crew have been with us for years, and between them they have worked on everything from a two-storey terrace in Lewisham to a Grade I listed church in Canterbury. We do not subcontract the skilled work out. The people who turn up on your scaffolding are the same people who quoted the job and who will be there when it is finished
OVER 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE
Experience Working Across Property Types
We have worked on listed churches, Georgian townhouses in Kensington, Victorian terraces across South London, a period shopfront conversion in Rochester, and a brick facade restoration in Palace Gate that involved refacing every individual brick in situ. We have also built garden walls, carved new stone door surrounds, and re-rendered four-storey houses from top to bottom. The jobs vary. The standard of work does not.
Old buildings need someone who knows what they are getting into before they start. Lime walls behave differently to modern cavity walls. Stone that looks solid from the pavement can be rotten three inches in. Previous repairs done in cement can be trapping moisture that is quietly destroying the brickwork around it. We have been finding and fixing these problems for 30 years, and that experience is worth more than any brochure claim about quality.
Quality, Integrity, and Craftsmanship
We do not cut corners on materials. If a building needs NHL 3.5 lime mortar, it gets NHL 3.5 lime mortar, not a bag of cement because it is cheaper and faster. If a stone indent needs to come from a specific quarry to match the original, we source it from that quarry rather than using whatever is sitting in the yard. That approach takes longer and costs more than bodging it, but the work lasts and it looks right. We have seen too many buildings damaged by previous trades who took the quick route, and we are not interested in adding to the list.
People come back to us. That is probably the most useful thing we can say about how we work. We get repeat customers, we get referrals from architects and conservation officers, and we get called in to fix jobs that other firms have walked away from. If that were not the case after 30 years, we would have packed it in a long time ago.
